Foreign Movies

July 1, 2008 by miles0fox

Ach! Foreign films, ewww! How come some people think that? I live in the USA, and I’ve come to find that the foreign films that find their way here are usually better than the ones made in Hollywood. It’s because the bad films made in foreign countries don’t get exported over here. India, for example, makes more films than most of the rest of the world combined, but the majority are terrible films and never escape the borders of the country. The old films that make here in the US and world markets are those that are either high quality films which really deserve that distinction, or they’re films that have an excellent chance of being commercially successful despite their flaws.

Plus foreign filmmakers generally are not powered by megalithic corporations whose primary concern is always the dollar. They are artists who want to produce high quality art. In some countries filmmakers even receive government funding. So, foreign films that make it to the world market tend to be much, much better than the usual crop of American films.

Of course, we have great American directors as well—Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, and a host of other names come immediately to mind. But these filmmakers either have amassed enough clout to work within the Hollywood picture industry with an unusual degree of freedom, or they have chosen or been forced to work outside it, just as Godard, de Oliveira, von Trier, Yimou, Kiarostami, Arvelo, Rhomer, Herzog, Miyazaki, Cantet, and the other great foreign filmmakers do. And while there might not be much difference between the best American filmmakers and the best foreign filmmakers, there is a huge difference between the best foreign filmmakers who make it to the world market and the studio minions who constitute most of the poor to mediocre American filmmakers you usually see represented at the local megaplex. So, yes, I think foreign film buffs are typically people with more artistic sophistication than the norm; even if they don’t start out that way, they end up that way because the foreign films which make it to our shores are typically far superior to most home-made studio fare, so viewers who patronize them grow to recognize and appreciate a better quality product.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Combat

March 2, 2008 by heal3r

I bought, I beat it, I think it took 20 minutes.  Sure I had it on the novice level but come one.  I guess the game was designed more for multi player than campaign.  I mean, the story and game is awesome but why is it so short?   One of my favorite scenes was hogh in the sky dropping bombs and large bullets on “bad guys” on the ground.  There is a lot of sniper opportunity, close combat , and crowd scenes.  very fun.

I’ll up the level and play again, and tryout the online version.  I’m not much for online, because it’s dominated by teens or hard core gamers who play 8 hours a day. I can’t compete with that skill level.

Terminator is Stupid

February 19, 2008 by heal3r

Not Arnold, he’s cool, but the concept of the terminator movie is silly. The major beef is simple, if robots take over, and can flash back into the past, all they need to do is send a few computers back to the time of early man and snuff them out. Bam, no people. Then the robots create their world fresh without people. Man, I hope cybernetic droids don’t read this and use my idea.

Same thing with the Matrix, awesome movie, ridiculous premise. Machines use people as fuel. Why bother? And why can’t the matrix machines flash back thru time? The terminator guys can do it…don’t tell me Smith hasn’t thought of that already. That agent is seriously sharp. Agent. is that a play on computer words? Those wachowski brothers are worldfully witty, but can they riddle me this…

Isn’t all of life meaningless? We live for a time and then die. And it doesn’t matter. Name every person you can possibly think of and then consider all the people you will never know or care about. Then wrap your head around all the people who will never know or care about you. Why should oceans have any care for the individual drops? we are a sea of people that rise and fall like rain and for what?

Many people will say there is life after death. But same thing then. For what? And who cares? Now you are a particle of dust in a universe expanding infinitely thru time and space. What difference do you make? What possible trail could you leave that would matter measured against infinite existence.

Yah.

Watching Movies

February 2, 2008 by heal3r

There are dozens of mediums thru which movie watching is possible. For example, I have regular cable, premium channels, and HD channels. I have movies on demand available 24/7. I have access to movies online via Vongo and Itunes. I download movies and watch them on my PSP. I can also watch shows and movies on my nano ipod or my iphone. I receive dvd’s from netflix pretty much every other day. I even connect my laptop to my big screen HD TV and watch movies from the internet on my laptop on my tv. There are so many opportunities to watch movies, so many ways and means to watch movies, that I find myself grateful and bereft of complaint. Now they just need to make better movies.

Strategy Diplomacy

February 2, 2008 by heal3r

Millions of people, thousands of games.  Have you ever played diplomacy?  I did, at work.  A guy basically created the game by hand and we played and it was pretty cool.  Except that the premise of diplomacy in the game almost prerequisites backstabbing.  Fun for some, not so much for others.  I think it’s better to have superior numbers and us ethe threat of annihilation to keep peace ;)

So it turns out this game diplomacy is old and famous.  And the original version is annoying.  Odd map, slow growth, stodgy game I think.   That being said, I’ve learned some real life lessons in my first real game of diplomacy.   Be friendly, don’t say too much, say hello to everyone.   In my first game, I broke all 3 rules.  I don’t think I’m going to make it very long in the game, but I appreciate the reminders of real life diplomacy.  Smile, shake hands, be patient, ask questions.

Starting with Nothing in Mind

February 1, 2008 by heal3r

Second Life.  I read about the first person to make a million dollars in a virtual world.  And the million was actual real american dollars.  In conversation a friend asked me some esoteric existential blah blah about maybe second life is real and this is a made up life.  While I could see people getting fully engrossed in a  virtual world some day in the future, I still think there is a real world line people are unable to cross.  Ironically, it’s the things that hold us back in real life, that would stand in the way of a second life. A real second life.  It’s true that some people live as very different creatures in their make believe worlds.  Some are famous or rich or talented where in the real world they see themselves as unfairly limited perhaps.  But this is an illusion, both the success and the failure are just constructs of the person’s own self view perception of reality. Until otherwise disproved, it is always what you are committed to that shows up in your general life.  This of course does not refer to the constant variables outside your sphere of influence, but it could be argued by some that everything in your life is a result of your will.

Personally I’m not willing to go that far.  I would hope there is some universal checks and balances otherwise we would all soon be isolated into oblivion. One day when everything we want is within mind’s reach, we will be, encased in our own personal paradise.   Until then, our fears on either side of this life will dictate our results.  That lady made her first million in Second Life, and now she is working on her first million in real life. I’m going to bed to 3rd life to dream about my million.

Last King Of ScotLand

January 16, 2008 by heal3r

Wow, the title just gives away the whole movie plot…NOT. But now I know scotts are humanitarian idiots with an amazing sense of adventure, poor self preservation skills, and just enough luck and balls to get by. I guess his (James McAvoy) main crime was being politically idealist and young helping people in a country (Uganda) he clearly didn’t understand. How could he be so smart and so dumb at the same time?

( Isn’t that a line in a movie somewhere? “You are the dumbest smart person”…oh yah I robot. )

Despite my whining the movie was entertaining for sure. I appreciated the historical and cultural insights mixed with the constant fear of death. Between that move and reading about Afghanistan, I am unbelievably proud and happy and thankful to live in the US. I may be clueless about the rest of the world, and I may be ok with that.

Why You Lie

January 16, 2008 by heal3r

You lie about your age, your experience, your relationships, your past, your abilities, your beliefs.  Heck, the shorter list is what do you tell the truth about?  My question is…why do you lie?  Is there some real threat that makes lying the only viable option?  Is there more power, more opportunity in a lie than in the truth?  Isn’t it exhausting?

Have you ever asked yourself why you lie? Did you give an honest answer?  Do you lie  to everyone or only certain people? Have some of your lies become so familiar that you almost think they are true?  What have been some of the consequences of your lies?  What would be the consequences if people knew your worst lies?

How do you feel about people who lie?  Do you respect them or avoid them?  Could you stop lying if your life depended on it?  Is lying the real gateway drug?  Can you have an amazing relationship if you are lying?

How do you know people don’t know you are lying?  If you know someone is lying, over and over again, how do you treat them.  What is so scary about the truth?  What would your life be like if you stopped lying?  What if you diverted all the energy of all those lies into doing and being something great…

What if…it mattered?  You being honest, having intregity…what if it mattered?  Like it could cure cancer, feed the starving,  shine light in the dark scary places?  How do you know it doesn’t matter?  Are you always right? Are you willing to choose something other than lying?   It might matter.  To someone.  To everyone.  To me.  It matters.

i r ossum

So, I was browsing around the web when I ran over this little group that picks on kids and refers to themselves as “child-free”. I mean, seriously… I know some people don’t want to have kids because they feel they’re restraints on the entertainment side of life, but… going out of your way to harass the little darlings? Besides, I’m pretty sure every person on that site is just whining about kids because, well… they’ve never had the opportunity to make them.

Seriously, how many people that base their lives on the internet and just try to grow their “e-peen” and act all cool have gotten the opportunity to sleep with the opposite gender? Not many, to be totally honest. Now, if you look at some of the spelling and avatars of the members on that, you could easily figure out the majority of them are handicapped, “furries”, incapable of social interaction, or a variant of the above.

I’m not going to specifically poke at anyone in that, but if you’re going to freak out about kids, then why not do it discreetly? Besides, the kid most likely accidentally bumped into you - it’s hard to miss that entire glob of mass, dear. :)

So it’s like… 8:00PM here and I’m *meek cough* a bit drowsy. I was thinking about making a profile, but then I remembered the fact that I make fun of everyone’s profiles often using educated guesses to what an individual is blogging about based on their profile.

Usually celebrity gossipers are fat people who hate their life so they decided to make the life of celebrities worse by being the lowlife they are and hoping maybe a celebrity has the time to go down on their third-rate blog and to laugh at it and show his friends.

Political bloggers are angry virgins who often despise those around them and bash those around them without mercy. Yes, it is a shame that they exist, but once you get them doing they’re just so damn funny!

Artistic blog people are usually neurotic and married to sock puppets, and often find theirselves demeaning people for their spelling errors and considering it makes them inferior to their own self. They usually whine about the lack of creativity and ideas in the public and claim that they could do better.

People that do blogs like Philocreativity are usually superior to all others in every single way and nearly rival the readers of Philocreativity in awesome(ness). I mean, seriously, it must take some real talent to make material like this. xD

Anyways, I bid ye an adieu and hope my humorous attempt at making this post remotely interesting truly did humour you. I mean, I put my heart and soul in these things. No, really.

Calling You Out

January 5, 2008 by miles0fox

So we’re getting the site up on ‘mostlysomething.com’ soon enough. Until then you have to put up with the lovely ‘.wordpress.’ in the middle of the url. :/ Fret not though, we shall soon enough have it up on our domain and making things better. All we need though is your continued support for us and your undying love and patience as we make these posts.

Hopefully in making this site we’ll accomplish what we intend to: Allowing the blog readers to enjoy some material from two brothers that are just average in every single way. Maybe you can relate to that? Good, now you should feel more comfortable with reading our material… right?

Anyways… I’ve been looking for an awesome space MMORPG for ages now (preferably a free browser-based one), but it’s nearly impossible to find one of those. I remember Astronest… greatest space MMO ever - I mean seriously, fully customizable ships? How can you top that?

So I’ve been thinking of making one myself with a few friends. Only fear is that it costs money, takes up way too much time, and is so complicated. Of course, saying that almost makes it seem totally un-rewarding and just not worth doing, but, wrong! In the end, you have a nice community of MMORPGers who love the work you did and the satisfaction of designing something successful. Isn’t that just great? Sure is! In other words, I’m going to procrastinate to deep’s end until this MMO is even started. Buahaha!
